- The USA intervened because of the way that Spain was treating the Cubans who were fighting for independence. The Americans were against imperialism and so opposed Spain governing Cuba. This was made worse by the fact that Spain was imprisoning hundreds of thousands of Cubans in camps in dreadful conditions.
